Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Ondo , Dr Olukayode Ajulo (SAN) has called on those planning the nationwide protest to reconsider and allow for reconciliation, emphasising the importance of maintaining public peace.
Ajulo, who gave the advice in a statement yesterday, acknowledged the right of every citizen to engage in peaceful protest, but cautioned against the potential risks posed by individuals who might hijack such movement to perpetrate violence and disrupt public order.
“As someone who has actively participated in protests for over 30 years, I understand the power and importance of peaceful demonstrations. However, the current climate is not conducive for such activities without risking the safety and security of our communities,” the AG stated.
He urged the protest organisers to consider alternative approaches that would prevent their cause from being compromised by those with malicious intent.
“While the right to protest is fundamental, it is equally crucial to ensure that these actions do not provide a platform for evildoers to inflict harm or jeopardise public peace,” he added.
The commissioner encouraged finding common ground with the government, suggesting dialogue and reconciliation as more effective means of addressing grievances.
“I appeal to all parties involved to engage in constructive discussions and seek resolutions that promote unity and understanding. Government is open to dialogue and committed to addressing the concerns of its citizens.”
He assured the public of his commitment to safeguard their rights, while maintaining order and stability.
The senior lawyer stated that after quality consultation with stakeholders and leadership of security and civil society groups in the state, his office had created a new office, Citizen Rights and Advisory Bureau, CRAB, which would be responsible for promoting and protecting the rights of citizens, as well as providing guidance and advice on various matters affecting their lives.
“This is to provide a platform for citizens to seek guidance and redress, the bureau will play a vital role in fostering a more inclusive, responsive and accountable government.
“I therefore urge the people of the state, particularly those with grievances against government, corporate bodies and individuals, to approach his office or use these contact lines: 0915 575 9305 and 0707 351 8535 to register their concerns,” Ajulo said, promising that all complaints would get to the office of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, which would ultimately be passed to President Bola Tinubu.
