The Akwa Ibom local government elections kicked off today amind complaints of low turnout and late arrival of election materials.
Daily Intel Newspaper observed that elections were held in the three senatorial districts of the state to elect LG chairmen and councillors.
It was gathered that amid voters appathy, election materials arrived late in most polling units
It was noted that at Unit 7, Ward 12 in Itu Local Government Area, very few voters were observed waiting for the arrival of materials from the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission.
According to reports, this was the situation in most polling units, including Unit 2, Ward 11 in Itu Local Government and Unit 007, Ward 14 in Uyo Local Government areas of the state.
Quoting a Peoples Democratic Party agent, Mrs Rita Archibong,it was noted that at Unit 001, Ward 14, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, accreditation had not started because election materials were yet to arrive.
She said, “We are still waiting for election materials from the AKISIEC office, so accreditation has not started.”
Elections in Nigeria have been generally marred by issues of late materials arrival, and non-willingness of voters to troop out enmasse to voting centres.
