Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has urged the state House of Assembly to immediately commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Godwin Obaseki for allegedly threatening to burn down the country.
State chairman of the party, Emperor Jarret Tenebe made the call in a statement, following a video of the governor speaking on the shooting incident that led to the death of Inspector Akor Onuh, the police orderly of Senator Monday Okpebholo, last Thursday.
According to Tenebe, “The sign of his cognitive impairment has been a source of concern not just for Edo people, but also to the governor himself, so much so because, he readies his thugs – the dangerous Edo State Security Network, ESSN, and Public Work Volunteers, POWOV, to kill, maim and wound anyone that holds contrary views of his divisive administration.
“The avoidable tragic incident of last Thursday, July 18 is a vivid example of how far state sponsored extrajudicial killings have been going on, but covered by the state government with deceptive reports of inter-cult fights. It is time for this madness to stop. It is time to stop Obaseki before he carries out his threat.
“Edo people can no longer watch Governor Obaseki’s incessant violent politics that has heightened insecurity in the state.
“We are therefore calling on the House of Assembly to immediately condemn Obaseki’s reckless and dangerous threat to burn down Nigeria. We are urging the speaker and members of the Assembly to immediately start his impeachment process that has become overdue.”
However, in a swift reaction to APC’s call, the state Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare said the party is fruitlessly attempting to twist a comment made by Governor Obaseki at a stakeholders meeting on Sunday in Benin City.
According to the commissioner, the governor only stressed the need for a free and fair election in the September 21 governorship poll in the state.
“For the records, we want to restate that the comments of the governor is that ‘if a free and fair election is not allowed to hold sway in Edo State on September 21, it will trigger a major crisis in Nigeria,” Nehikhare said.
