The Borno State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, has revealed that death toll in the suicide bombings in Gwoza Local Government Area of the state has risen to 18.
Recall that a female suicide bomber had on Saturday detonated an Improvised Explosive Device, IED, targeting guests returning from a wedding.The state police command had initially given the figure of the dead following the incident as eight with several others injured.
Confirming the attacks, the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Dason said eight persons, including a female suicide bomber and her baby, died in the incident and 15 others serious injured.
It was learnt that the suicide bomber wrapped the IED with her baby at her bak.
But in an account over the attack on Sunday, the director-general of Borno State Emergency Management Agency, Barkindo Saidu said the death toll has risen to 18, with the victims comprising adult males, females and children.
Meanwhile, another suicide bomber disguised as a mourner also detonated an explosive as the residents were preparing for the burial of those killed in the first attack.
According to Saidu, 19 people were seriously injured in the attacks while 23 others are waiting for military escort in the Medical Regimental Services, MRS, clinic.
“I am now coordinating for a chopper tonight. I have mobilised emergency drugs to complement the shortage of drugs in Gwoza.
“The degree of injuries range from abdominal raptures, skull and limb fractures.
“I have also received a report that there is a suspected suicide bomber in Pulka,” the SEMA boss said.
The military has imposed a curfew in Gwoza LGA following the attacks.
