Kaduna State House of Assembly on Wednesday repealed the laws that established Zaria Metropolitan Authority, Kafanchan Municipal Authority and the Kaduna Capital Territory Authority in 2021.
The passage of the bills followed its first, second and third readings.
Speaker Yusuf Liman, who presided over the plenary, passed the bill for a law to repeal the laws after the chairman of the joint committee on the three authorities law and judicial law presented a report to the House.
Member representing Jama’a Constituency, Ali Kalat moved the motion for the bills to be passed into law and was seconded by Nasiru Idris, member representing Sabon Gari Constituency.
The House also repealed the law establishing the Fire and Public Safety Law No.20 of 2018 and enacted the Kaduna State Fire and Public Safety Law, 2024.
The law was enacted after the Chairman of the Joint Committee on Security and Intelligence and Judiciary, Munirat Suleiman, presented a report on the bill to the House.
Member representing Zaria City Constituency, Mahmood Lawal, who spoke to journalists shortly after the session, explained that the existence of metropolitan authorities is no longer possible after the Supreme Court judgement on local government financial autonomy.
Lawal, who is also the Chairman, Joint Committee on Zaria Metropolitan Authority and Judiciary, said the repeal was necessary and timely.
“We found it necessary to repeal the laws that the authorities will no longer exist. This to enable local government authorities perform their duties based on the provisions of the constitution, following the Supreme Court judgement,” he said.
