Mr. Aloy Ejimakor, lead counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, has claimed that the IPOB leader is ill and that has been denied medical attention.
Ejimakor in a post on his x handle on Tuesday said Kanu’s request to see a doctor was rebuffed by the Department of Security Service, DSS, despite being visibly sick.
He said Kanu was found unwell during a visit on Monday, exhibiting shortness of breath, low blood pressure, and general discomfort.
He stated that a request for a doctor’s visit was submitted but was denied by the DSS where Kanu is being held.
Ejimakor wrote, “Yesterday, during our visitation with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, we found him ill, with shortness of breath, low BP, and general malaise.
“For this reason, he requested to see his doctor, and we submitted a letter in this regard. Today, the doctor arrived at the DSS but was denied access to #MNK.
“As a background, the DSS is well aware that MAZI NNAMDI KANU is susceptible to Potassium Deficiency which affects the function of the heart. This problem was diagnosed by DSS doctors some 3 years ago and they confessed to their lack of the expertise to treat the problem, which in all probability is the cause of #MNK’s current illness.
“This is no doubt very serious and deadly to boot. The readings of the electronic heart monitor supplied by the DSS have been recording low pressure levels for nearly 9 days in a row without any medical intervention to ascertain whether the blood potassium level is within the clinically acceptable range.“
Kanu has been detained in DSS headquarters since he was illegally rendition from Kenya in 2021.
Southeast governors and leaders from the region recently called on President Bola Tinubu to release the IPOB leader, saying it would foster national reconciliation.
