Telecommunications giant MTN has denied orchestrating the poor network deemed a ploy to influence the outcome of the ongoing FG, Labour talk on tarrif hike after telecom operators warned of outages if the high operating cost was not addressed.
However, the unstable network which began on Friday and extended into Saturday has sparked frustration as customers struggled with disrupted communication and financial transactions.
Many have contended that the poor service which is coming on the heels of labour and FG talks, may not be far from a deliberate attempt to justify the 50 per cent proposal as the only guarantee for improved service.
Recall that telecom operators in the country had in a statement called on the federal government to review the tarrif, warning that it risk shutting operations due to unsustainable cost of operations.
in view of their demand, the FG through the Nigerian Communication Commission announced a 50 per cent tarrif hike which was rejected by the Nigeria Labour Union.
Labour Union in a statement had threatened to go on strike Feb 4, should government proceeded with the implementation of the tarrif, arguing that an increase in tarrif would further impoverish Nigerians.
However, the strike was suspended after a meeting between the FG and Labour leaders reached an agreement to hold further consultation and come up with widely acceptable figure, amid 5% increase proposed by Labour.
While the consultation was ongoing, MTN subscribers accrosss the country have lamented major network outage, accusing MTN of using poor service to influence the outcome of the consultation.
But in an official apology message to subscribers, MTN Nigeria which admitted its network had been bad, assured customers that services have been fully restored.
“Dear customer, we sincerely apologize for the challenges experienced with internet services yesterday in parts of Lagos State.
“This has been resolved, and services are fully restored. Thank you for your understanding.”
