The Amnesty International has rebuked the Nigerian government for failing to protect the lives of Nigerians, citing recent attacks in Plateau, Benue, Zamfara and Katsina State.
The Amnesty International further noted that the increased mass abduction of women and girls, including kidnapping of school children for ransom are clear indication that the Nigerian State is unable to protect lives and properties of it citizens.
The organisation in a post on its x, on Thursday, pointed out that between December 2023 and February 2024, no fewer than 1, 336 people were killed in Plateau state alone, most of whom are women, children and the elderly.
The organisation further stated that hundreds of people have also lost their lives in Benue, Zamfara and Katsina State to attacks by unknown gunmen.
The organisation said the incessant attacks the leads to lost of lives as well as the daily abduction for ransom by gunmen whose victims are mostly women and girls, who have been viciously raped while in captivity, are indication the government has failed in the responsibility of protecting lives and properties.
“Nigeria is increasingly failing to protect its people. From December last year to February this year 1,336 people were killed in Plateau State. Hundreds have also been killed in Benue, Zamfara and Katsina
“Almost daily abductions for ransom are putting lives in danger. The number of Nigerians abducted by gunmen is unknown. But the victims usually suffer shocking abuses. Several abducted women and girls, including school children have been viciously raped while in captivity.”
