Apex lgbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has commended former President Olusegun Obasanjo, South-East governors and other stakeholders for taking strategic steps towards restoring peace, unity and stability in the zone.
Ohanaeze stressed that Obasanjo’s presence at the last South-East Governors’ Forum meeting in Enugu played a crucial role in rekindling the confidence and vigour of the state governors.
The body noted that the collective wisdom and guidance of those in attendance also paved the way for a renewed focus towards addressing the insecurity and violence that had threatened the fabric of the South-East.
It called on governors in the refion to work together to address the root-causes of the security challenges in the zone, as failure and inadequate funding of the South-East security outfit code-named ‘EBUBEAGU’ led to security threats within the region.
According to the group, “It is with appreciation and recognition that Ohanaeze Ndigbo commends Chief Emeka Anyaoku, former secretary-general of the Commonwealth, and HRM Igwe Alfred Achebe for their instrumental contributions in bringing former President Obasanjo to guide and mentor the South-East governors towards a path of collective responsibility in safeguarding the Southeast region.”
A statement issued on Thursday by the factional secretary-eneral of Ohanaeze, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, further commended the Southeast Governors for their repentance and renewed dedication towards fostering peace and security in the Southeast.
He added that a crucial step towards sustainable peace would involve a reshuffle of security agency’s leadership, which will ensures that individuals appointed possess a deep understanding of the region and a genuine commitment to its welfare.
