Benue State Police Command says its continuous clampdown on criminals in Sankera axis of the state in the last three months has led to the death of two bandits with dislodgement of a camp in the area.
This was disclosed in a statement on Tuesday by the state Commissioner of Police, Hassan Yabanet.
Yabanet said several operations carried out led to the arrest of suspects who have already been charged to court while others were neutralised in the cause of exchange of fire.
The CP in a statement signed by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sewuese Anene, said as part of follow-up operation, men of Operation Zenda raided a criminal hideout at Tse-Uza in Mbatyula council ward, Katsina-ala Local Government Area, and on arrival the bandits engaged the police in a gun duel but were overpowered by the superior fire power of the police team.
He said two of the bandits received gunshot injuries and were later confirmed dead by a doctor and their corpses deposited at the General Hospital, Ukum, while other suspects escaped.
The CP said exhibits recovered from the camp include two pistols loaded with ammunition; three locally made short guns, thirteen motorcycles; camouflage uniforms, six walkie talkies, one Toyota Corolla vehicle and one tricycle.
He commended the bravery exhibited by the officers and enjoined the people of Sankera to always avail useful information to the police about the suspects at large, who might be seen with gunshot injuries, reiterating his commitment to fight crime to a standstill in the state.
