House of Representatives has called on the federal government to immortalise the chairman of defunct National Electoral Commission, NEC, Professor Humphrey Nwosu, who conducted the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election believed to have been won by late Chief Moshood Abiola.
This followed a motion moved by Peter Uzokwe and Chinwe Nnabuife during plenary yesterday.
While debating the motion, the lawmakers noted that Professor Nwosu was appointed NEC chairman from 1989 to 1993 by then military president, Ibrahim Babangida.
They said the House is cognisant of the various efforts made by previous administrations to immortalise those that fought for the nation’s democracy.
They also pointed out that an edifice (the Abuja Stadium) was named after the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief Abiola by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The two lawmakers explained that: “We are worried about the continued neglect of Professor Nwosu who put his life on the line to see that justice was not only done, but seen to be done.
“We are concerned that the National Anthem was changed, and we all pray to God to help us build a nation where no man is oppressed, yet Nwosu is still not celebrated while he is alive.
“Many edifices were named after our heroes past, like Louis Edet house for Police, Micheal Imodu for Labour, Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Murtala Muhammed Airport and M.K.O Abiola Stadium etc”.
The Anambra-born lawmakers said they are disturbed that not even a road has been named after this hero of our democracy till date.
Consequently, the House resolved to urge the federal government to immortalise Professor Nwosu when he is still alive.
It equally urged the federal government to give him a national honour and also name the INEC headquarters after him.
