The Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETfund, has frowned at beneficiaries of its scholarships abroad who absconded after completing their study, vowing to take action against such ingratitude.
While the latest data of the Fund’s intervention between June 2023 and July 2024 showed that 4,980 academics from Nigerian public universities received N10.8bn worth of scholarships for Masters, doctoral and post-doctoral degrees, among others, it was found that a total of 137 lecturers failed to return after their study.
The figure which was obtained by Daily Intel on Monday further indicated that the sum of N8.6bn was expended for the training of 68 academics in foreign universities and 1,156 academics in local universities for PhDs.
The data further disclosed that the sum of N340m was disbursed for the bench work for 24 academics in foreign universities.
The data also revealed that the sum of N967m was disbursed for the training of 10 Nigerian academics in foreign universities and 368 in local universities for master’s degrees.
The data further revealed that the sum of N921m was disbursed for post-doctoral training of 31 Nigerian lecturers in foreign universities during the period under review.
TETFund is an intervention agency of the government charged with the responsibility of using funding alongside project management to rehabilitate , restore and consolidate tertiary education in Nigeria.
