In response to the communities effected by the Ambazonian, Cameroon civil war, the Obanliku LGA of Cross River State have received relief items from the State emergency management agency.
Daily Intel Newspaper gathered that distribution of the relief items by the State emergency management agency was in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency ,NEMA.
In December 2023, the Ambazonia separatists activities encroached into the Belegete community and they reportedly hoisted their flag.
On incursion, they seperetists were said to have occupied the inaccessible Belegete for two weeks before Nigerian soldiers intervened and forced them out.
The Deputy Governor of Cross River State, Peter Odey, performed the flag-off of the relief items distribution at the Belegete IDP camp.
The Deputy Governor, represented by his Head of Personal Staff, Dr. Chris Ojikpong, stated that the current administration of Senator Prince Bassey Otu was committed to addressing the challenges facing Internally Displaced Persons in the state.
He underscored the importance of the government’s role in ensuring the welfare of its citizens and reassured that the government would continue to address humanitarian issues and seek lasting solutions.
He urged the joint committee overseeing the distribution to ensure that the relief materials reach those directly affected and that the items are used effectively to alleviate the hardships faced by the people.
He commended the security agencies for their efforts in maintaining peace and stability in the area, assuring that the government would continue to support them until the displaced residents can safely return home.
Earlier, the Director General of Cross River emergency management agency, James Anam, expressed gratitude to the Belegete people for their patience and peaceful conduct following the horrific attack by Ambazonian separatists, which has forced them to seek shelter in nearby villages within the Local Government Area.
He sympathised with the community over the tragic incidents, which he described as “inhuman and totally unacceptable,” leading to the loss of lives and the destruction of farmlands.
